Why You Should Wash Your Fruit & Veg Properly (using white vinegar)

We all love fresh, crisp fruit and vegetables, but have you ever stopped to think about what’s lurking on their surfaces? That innocent apple or punnet of berries has been on quite a journey before reaching your kitchen and handled by multiple people, exposed to dirt, bacteria, and possibly even pesticides.

While a quick rinse under the tap might seem sufficient, it’s often not enough to remove all the hidden nasties.

The good news? There’s a simple and effective way to ensure your produce is as clean as possible, all that’s needed is a vinegar wash! It’s quick, easy, and can even help prolong the freshness of your fruit and veg.

In just a few minutes, you can significantly reduce bacteria and pesticides, giving you peace of mind every time you take a bite. Ready to learn how? Keep reading!

Why Bother Washing Produce?

Your fruit and veg may look clean, but lurking beneath the surface are germs, bacteria, and traces of chemicals from pesticides. Even organic produce can carry dirt and bacteria from the soil, handling, and transportation. Oh, and let’s not forget about curious shoppers who pick up and put down produce at the supermarket!

While a quick rinse in water is better than nothing, it doesn’t remove all of the nasties. A vinegar and water wash, however, helps to eliminate bacteria and keeps your produce fresher for longer.

The Best Way To Wash Your Fruit & Veg

Every week, when I bring my groceries home, I spend just 15 minutes giving my fruit and veg a proper clean. Here’s how you can do it too:

Step 1: Make A Vinegar & Water Solution

You can use your sink, a large bowl, or a large dish. Fill it with cold water and add ½ to 1 cup of white vinegar. This magic mix will help kill bacteria and dissolve some of the pesticide residue.

Step 2: Soak & Scrub (if needed)

Add your fruit or vegetables to the vinegar solution, let them soak for about 3 minutes. For sturdier produce like potatoes and carrots, use a vegetable brush to scrub off any stubborn dirt.

Even produce with a peel, like oranges and avocados, needs washing, your knife or peeler can transfer bacteria from the outside to the inside as you slice through.

Don’t submerge leafy greens. Instead, rinse them thoroughly under cold running water.

Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly

After their vinegar bath, transfer your produce to a colander and give them a good rinse under cold water. You’ll be amazed at how murky the water looks afterward!

Step 4: Dry Completely

Moisture is the enemy when it comes to storage. Lay your produce out on a clean tea towel and pat them dry with another towel. Ensuring they are completely dry prevents mould and bacteria from growing.

Step 5: Store Correctly

Storing your produce properly keeps it fresh for longer:

Most fruits and veg belong in the fridge. Store fruit in the low humidity drawer and vegetables in the high humidity drawer. If it’s not ripe yet, leave it out for a few days. Once ripe, move it to the fridge.

Potatoes, onions, and squash prefer a dry, dark environment, but don’t store onions and potatoes together, as onions release gases that make potatoes spoil faster.

A Special Tip For Berries

Berries are delicious but seem to go off the second you bring them home! A quick vinegar wash can help them last longer.

How to Wash Berries Properly

  1. Make a vinegar wash
Mix 1 part white vinegar with 4 parts cold water in a bowl.
  2. Soak the berries
Let them sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Rinse well
Transfer to a colander and rinse with cold water.
  4. Dry thoroughly
Lay them out on a tea towel and allow them to air dry completely.
  5. Store correctly
Line a meal prep container with kitchen paper and store your berries inside. Special produce saving containers work even better!

Using this method, your berries can last up to four days longer, more time to enjoy them before they turn into a sad, mushy mess.
