A Brief Word About The Ingredients

These six DIY spray cleaners all use ingredients that should be easy to find in stores. Here’s a little bit more info on each of them:

  • Water
Water is usually the main ingredient in these homemade spray cleaners, making them a very frugal choice. Regular tap water works just fine.
  • White Vinegar
Always use distilled white vinegar in these recipes (avoid apple cider vinegar). Vinegar is great for cutting through grime, but it should not be used on natural stone surfaces like granite or marble.
  • Castile Soap
Castile soap is a natural vegetable based product and is widely available in shops and online.
  • Borax & Washing Soda
The all-purpose spray contains borax, while the soap mix spray includes washing soda. Borax offers stronger cleaning power, but washing soda dissolves more easily. Both are available in the laundry aisle of most supermarkets. If you don’t want to buy large boxes, you can substitute one for the other in these recipes. When using borax, dissolve it in very hot water first to ensure it blends properly.
  • Olive Oil
Used in the dusting spray to nourish and protect wooden surfaces. You can substitute with vegetable oil if needed.
  • Rubbing Alcohol
I use common 70% isopropyl alcohol, which is available in the pharmacy. It’s essential for streak free glass cleaning.
  • Essential Oils
These add a natural fragrance and, in some cases, extra antibacterial properties. The disinfecting spray requires tea tree oil for its germ fighting power. Essential oils are widely available online and in many major retailers. My favourites include lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree oil.

1. The Ultimate All-Purpose Spray

Perfect for: Kitchen surfaces, bathroom counters, and general household cleaning.

You Will Need:

  • 1 and 3/4 Cups Of Hot Water
  • 1 and a 1/2 Teaspoons Of Borax
1/4 Of A Cup Of White Vinegar
  • A Squirt of Castile Soap

Dissolve the borax in hot water first before adding the vinegar and castile soap. This ensures everything blends smoothly for a powerful cleaner that cuts through grease and grime. Then pour into a spray bottle and use as needed.

2. The Gentle Soap Mix Spray

Perfect for: Delicate surfaces, mild cleaning jobs, and when you want a light, fresh scent.

You Will Need:

  • 2 Cups Of Water
  • 1/2 A Teaspoon Of Washing Soda
  • 1 Teaspoon Of Castile Soap
  • 8 To 10 Drops Of Essential Oil (optional)

Essential oils like lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus add a lovely scent while boosting antibacterial properties.

3. The Powerhouse Vinegar Spray

Perfect for: Hard water stains, deodorising surfaces, and tackling grime.

You Will Need:

  • 1 Cup Of Water
  • 1 Cup Of White Vinegar
  • 8 To 10 Drops Of Essential Oil (optional)

While vinegar is amazing for cleaning, avoid using it on natural stone surfaces like granite or marble as it can cause damage over time.

4. The Best DIY Dusting Spray

Perfect for: Wooden furniture, shelves, and decorative surfaces.

You Will Need:

  • 1 And 3/4 Cups Of Water
  • 1/4 Of A Cup Of White Vinegar
  • 2 Teaspoons Of  Olive Oil
  • 8 To 10 Drops Of Essential Oil (optional)

The olive oil helps condition wood and leaves surfaces with a subtle shine, while the vinegar lifts dust and dirt effortlessly. If left for any length of time, the water and oil will separate, but a quick shake before use will make them gel again.

5. The Streak Free Glass & Mirror Spray

Perfect for: Windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces.

You Will Need:

  • 1 Cup Of Water
  • 1 Cup Of Rubbing Alcohol
  • 1/2 A Teaspoon Of Castile Soap

You Will Need:

  • 1 And A 1/2 Cups Of Water
