If you hang clothes at night, you could be shocked in the morning

Imagine this: it’s late, you’re knackered, and you come home from work to find a mountain of dirty clothes. You shove them in the wash and when the washer finishes, you hang them out on the line in your garden overnight to dry.

Feels like a genius move, doesn’t it? But then morning rolls around, and surprise, surprise, your laundry’s turned into a big problem.

Turns out, leaving your clothes out overnight can lead to some pretty unexpected results. Fancy a heads up on what’s really happening while you’re catching up on your sleep? Keep reading.

Is It OK To Leave Laundry Out Overnight?

Don’t go giving yourself a hard time about it. We all know that time is tight in the morning and leaving washing on the line overnight is way better than leaving wet laundry in the machine overnight.

But there are a few things you need to know first which might make you see things differently. They include;

It Takes Ages to Dry

Here’s the thing: the sun is basically nature’s blow dryer. No sun at night, though, is there? Your clothes might still be damp when you check on them in the morning.

And if there’s dew overnight? Game over, they’ll feel wetter than when you hung them up. Proper annoying, isn’t it?

If it’s breezy, your clothes might dry better. But if you’re in Britain, you’ll want to keep an eye on the weather report, or risk finding your laundry swimming in a puddle at worst or wringing wet at best.

The Clothes Won’t Smell Fresh

You know that amazing, fresh off the line smell? Well, that’s thanks to the sun’s UV rays doing their disinfecting magic. No sun means bacteria might stick around, leaving your clothes smelling a bit… meh.

If your laundry already has that mouldy old smell, hanging out overnight could make it worse. Not exactly what you want when you’re reaching for your favourite hoodie, is it?

If you can, pop your clothes back in the sun the next day. It will remove the smell and freshen up your laundry.

Your Whites Might Not Be As White

Sunlight doesn’t just disinfect,  it naturally bleaches, too. If your white shirts or bed linens are starting to look a bit dull, hanging them out at night won’t do you any favours. UV rays are where the magic’s at.

Your white laundry needs the UV rays from the sun to help keep them white and bright.

(you can also try a bit of baking soda in your next wash to remove any yellowing and perk up those whites – works a treat!)

You Might Find That Insects Start To Call Your Clothes Home

This one’s for the arachnophobes. Clothes left out overnight can attract all sorts of bugs and creepy crawlies. Spiders, moths, who knows what else? Nobody wants a surprise 8 legged visitor when they’re folding laundry.

Insects seem to be really attracted to the scent of fabric softeners and heavily fragranced detergents. So if you must put them out at night, make sure you’re using white vinegar as a natural softener to help deter insects.

But always give your clothes a good shake before you bring them in. Trust us, it’ll save you from a mini heart attack.

So, Why Put Washing Out Overnight?

Here’s the thing, sometimes life is just too busy to hang washing out in the daytime. You’ve got work, kids, Netflix marathons, priorities, right? Hanging your clothes at night can be a lifesaver for your schedule. And hey, it’s still better than drying them indoors where mould loves to party.

Mould spores can play havoc with asthmatics and those with other medical conditions so you don’t want them in your home if you can help it. Plus nobody wants to use a tumble dryer when the weather’s fair and the bills are high.

But if you really want to level up, make sure they catch a bit of sunlight the next day. It’s like giving them a second chance at greatness.

So, What’s the Verdict?

Hanging your laundry out at night? It’s not the end of the world. Sure, there are some downsides, but if you’re clever about it, you can work around them. Check the weather, shake out the bugs, and give your clothes some sun the next day. Easy peasy.
