My T-Shirts Felt Like Sandpaper… Until I Learned This Simple Trick!
You know when you’ve got that favourite T-shirt, the one you’d wear every day if you could? Then, out of nowhere, it starts feeling like you’re wearing a bit of cardboard? Absolute nightmare.
But don’t worry, by the time you finish reading this short article you’ll know how to turn that stiff, scratchy T-shirt back into the soft, snuggly legend it once was.
Why Do T-Shirts Go All Rough?

Before we fix it, let’s chat about why your T-shirts feel more like sandpaper than clouds. It all starts with the way cotton gets treated. There are four processes that cotton fibres are put through which are:
- Carding
It’s like giving cotton a good brush. The fibres are teased into fine strands. This process is labour intensive and expensive, so sometimes they skip it. - Combing
Straightens and smooths the fibres and removes any impurities. It works in much the same way as brushing your hair, skimp on this, and you’ve got rough fabric. - Blending
Mixing cotton with other stuff like polyester. - Dyeing
Bright colours look nice, but they often use harsh chemicals which can leave the fabric feeling rough and stiff.
If any of the above stages aren’t done properly, there’s a good chance that your T-shirt will feel as rough and scratchy as a five day beard. You could opt for other materials that are designed to feel soft on your skin, but if you prefer the feel of real cotton, you don’t have to suffer that hard scratchy feeling.
All you need to do is the following to return your cotton Tees back to their comfortable glory days.
Tricks To Soften Your T-Shirts

Now, let’s get your T-shirts feeling proper soft again. These tips are easy, cheap, and don’t involve dodgy fabric softeners.
But bear in mind that it might take more than one go at these methods to restore your Tees back to softness. And some fabrics might not respond too well to these treatments either.
You could cause discolouration or other damage to your Tees. So always do a patch test in an inconspicuous area first.
The Vinegar & Baking Soda Hack
You’ve got this stuff in your kitchen already, so no excuses. All you need to do is;
- Grab a big bowl, chuck in a teaspoon of baking soda. Slowly pour in a cup of white vinegar. (Do it slow unless you want a science fair volcano)
- Stir it all up to remove any clumps, wait for any bubbling to stop and then throw it in the washing machine with your T-shirt and wash in the usual way. Boom, soft fabric, no faff.
The Salt Water Trick That Works Like Magic
This one’s like witchcraft, but it works. Simply;
- Fill a big pot with water and chuck in a cup of salt.
- Bring it to the boil, wet your T-shirt, then let it simmer in the salty soup for about half an hour.
- Rinse it, wash it, and feel the difference. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
Using Aloe Vera For The Softest Tees
Who knew the stuff you slap on sunburn works on T-shirts too? Simply;
- Mix a quarter cup of aloe vera gel with the same amount of water.
- Add it to your washing machine’s rinse cycle.
- Alternatively, let your T-shirt soak in the mix for a few minutes before washing.
Be warned; some aloe vera gels can contain alcohol and other chemicals that can damage some fabrics (don’t forget the patch test first).
Get Your Tees Soft With A Pumice Stone
Sounds weird, I know, but hear me out. All you have to do is;
- Rub a pumice stone all over the T-shirt (yes, even the sleeves and hem).
- Soak it overnight in a mix of water and fabric conditioner.
- Wash it in the morning, and it’ll feel like new.
It’s basically an exfoliation for your clothes.
Soften Your Tees In The Tumble Dryer

Line drying’s all well and good but it can leave your T-shirts feeling like cardboard. The tumbling action of the dryer can help soften the fabric again. All you need to do is;
- Dry your T-shirts until they’re about 70% done.
- Pop them in the tumble dryer with some laundry balls.
- Run a low heat, short cycle, and they’ll come out softer than a baby’s bum.
Sandpaper Can Soften Your Tees
Got a rough T-shirt with a printed design? This one’s for you. Simply;
- Gently rub sandpaper on the hems, sleeves, and neckline.
- Avoid the print, unless you want a distressed look.
- Wash and dry as usual.
Get softer T-Shirts With Epsom Salts
This one’s the simplest of the lot, all you have to do is;
- .Add a tablespoon of Epsom salts to your wash load.
- Wash as usual.
It’s natural, eco-friendly, and leaves your T-shirts feeling lush.
Use Conditioner (Yes, The Stuff For Your Hair)
If it works wonders for your locks, why not your T-shirts? Simply:
- Mix a tablespoon of hair conditioner with warm water.
- Soak your T-shirt in the solution for 15 to 30 minutes.
- Rinse it out and wash as usual.
Freeze Your T-Shirts
Sounds bizarre, but freezing fabric can break down stiffness. Plus it’s really easy to do, just;
- Wet your T-shirt slightly.
- Pop it in a plastic bag and chuck it in the freezer overnight.
- Thaw it out the next morning and wash as usual.
Cold magic, and it’s free!
You Could Try Fabric Beating (Old School Method)
If you’re feeling a bit old fashioned, try giving your T-shirt a good beating. Just like great granny used to back in the day, all you do is;
- Wet the T-shirt and lay it flat on a clean surface.
- Use a rolling pin or even your hands to pound the fabric.
- Rinse and wash as usual.
This helps loosen up the fibres, and it’s oddly therapeutic.
Use A Homemade Milk Bath
Milk proteins are surprisingly great for softening fabric. Just;
- Mix 1 cup of powdered milk with warm water in a basin.
- Soak your T-shirt for a couple of hours.
- Rinse and wash normally.
Who knew dairy could be a laundry hero?
Olive Oil Hack

A tiny bit of olive oil can work wonders. This might sound weird but it’s been reported to work. All you do is;
- Add a teaspoon of olive oil to your washing machine’s rinse cycle.
- Wash and dry as usual.
Not only will your T-shirts feel softer, but they’ll also smell fresh and natural.
Boil With Baking Soda Alone
Similar to the salt method but with baking soda for extra fibre loosening power. Simply;
- Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda to a pot of water.
- Bring it to a boil, then soak your T-shirt for 30 minutes.
- Rinse and wash.
Simple, effective, and perfect for those who love a kitchen hack.
