How I Made My Bathroom Smell Like A Spa Using Just 2 Ingredients

There’s nothing worse than a bathroom that smells damp, musty or just… off. I’ve tried sprays, plug ins and fancy candles, but nothing seemed to last or smell as fresh as I wanted.

That was until I discovered a simple trick using only two ingredients already sitting in my kitchen cupboard. It made my bathroom smell like a luxury spa and it couldn’t have been easier.

If you’re tired of overpowering air fresheners or cleaning products that just mask smells, this natural method is well worth a try.

The Two Ingredient Trick That Transformed My Bathroom

bicarbonate of soda

All I used was bicarbonate of soda and essential oils. That’s it. No harsh chemicals, no sprays and no expensive diffusers.

Bicarbonate of soda is brilliant at absorbing odours. It doesn’t just cover them up, it actually pulls smells out of the air and neutralises them.

Paired with a few drops of your favourite essential oil, it creates a light, calming scent that lingers for days.

I used lavender and eucalyptus for that spa like feeling, but you can pick any oil you like – lemon, peppermint and tea tree are also great options.

Why Natural Bathroom Deodorisers Work Better Than Air Fresheners

Most air fresheners sold in shops just mask bad smells. They’re full of synthetic fragrances that might smell strong at first, but wear off quickly and don’t deal with the actual problem.

This method works differently. Bicarbonate of soda absorbs moisture and smells, which is perfect for damp prone bathrooms. When combined with essential oils, it slowly releases a pleasant scent that feels light and natural, not heavy or artificial.

Plus, essential oils like eucalyptus and lavender have natural antibacterial properties. So not only does your bathroom smell cleaner, but it may actually be fresher too.

How To Make A Spa Scented Bathroom Freshener At Home

Bathroom

Making your own spa scented bathroom freshener at home is simple, affordable and doesn’t require any special tools.

I started by pouring about half a cup of bicarbonate of soda into a small bowl. This acts as the base and helps absorb any unpleasant smells lingering in the air.

Next, I added around 10 to 15 drops of lavender essential oil, followed by a few drops of eucalyptus oil for a fresh, clean aroma. You can use any scent you like, but these two are ideal if you’re aiming for that calming, spa like feel.

Once the oils were added, I gave the mixture a gentle stir to make sure the scent was spread evenly throughout the powder. Then I placed the bowl just behind the toilet, where it’s out of sight but still works its magic in the air.

Within an hour, the room smelled noticeably fresher, with a light and natural scent that wasn’t overpowering. It’s now my go to solution for keeping the bathroom fresh every day.

Where To Put Homemade Bathroom Deodoriser For Best Results

The best thing about this trick is that you can place it almost anywhere in the bathroom:

  • Behind the toilet
  • On a high shelf
  • In a cupboard to tackle musty smells
  • Inside a decorative jar with holes in the lid

You can even keep one under the sink or by the bath. Just make sure it’s somewhere out of reach of pets or small children, as it’s not meant to be touched or used on the skin.

For a more decorative look, you can also place the mixture in a glass jar, poke a few holes in the lid and add a ribbon or label.

How Long Do Natural Bathroom Deodorisers Last?

One of the reasons I love this method is how low maintenance it is. The mixture can last for up to two to four weeks, depending on the humidity in your bathroom.

If the scent starts to fade, simply stir it to refresh the scent and help it release more fragrance. If it still smells faint, just add a few more drops of essential oil directly into the mix to bring it back to life.

After about a month, it’s a good idea to tip it away and make a fresh batch. That way, you keep your bathroom smelling clean and spa like without any effort.

It’s a small trick that makes a big difference and only takes a minute to keep going.

Are Essential Oils Safe To Use In The Bathroom?

Essential Oil

Yes, when used properly, essential oils are perfectly safe in the bathroom. They’re natural, biodegradable and free from the artificial chemicals found in most store bought sprays.

However, you should always keep oils out of direct contact with skin or eyes and avoid diffusing strong scents for long periods in small, enclosed spaces. The trick here is using a low concentration, just enough to scent the air without overwhelming it.

If you have pets, especially cats, check if the oils you’re using are pet safe, as some essential oils can be toxic to animals if inhaled or ingested in high amounts.
