With a few simple routines, your kitchen can stay fresh and tidy without taking up all your free time.

Gather Your Cleaning Essentials

Before you begin, make sure you have the right tools to make cleaning faster and easier. A well stocked cleaning kit saves time and keeps your kitchen looking its best.

You’ll need:

  • Microfibre Cloths
Perfect for wiping down surfaces without leaving lint behind. Keep separate ones for different areas to avoid cross-contamination.
  • All-Purpose Cleaner
A must-have for countertops, tables, and appliances.
  • Washing Up Liquid
Ideal for degreasing hobs and washing dishes.
  • Oven Cleaner
Helps remove stubborn grease and burnt-on grime.
  • Kitchen Degreaser
Essential for tackling grease buildup on cupboards, walls, and appliances.
  • Scrubber Sponge
Great for removing tough stains on dishes and counters.
  • White Vinegar And Bicarbonate Of Soda
Natural cleaning heroes that help with odours and grime.
  • Stainless Steel Cleaner
Perfect for keeping your fridge and sink fingerprint free.
  • Glass Cleaner
Ideal for polishing glass surfaces and your oven door.

Once you have your cleaning kit ready, it’s time to start your routine.

The Daily Kitchen Cleaning Routine

A little effort each day keeps your kitchen from turning into a disaster zone. The goal here is maintenance, and you’ll do these small tasks that prevent dirt and mess from building up.

Clear and wipe surfaces after meals: After breakfast, lunch, and dinner, take a moment to wipe down the counters, hob, and table with a microfibre cloth and an all-purpose cleaner.

This stops crumbs and grease from settling in, making deep cleaning much easier. If you love to cook, keeping your surfaces clean as you go will make food prep much more enjoyable.

Do the washing up (or load the dishwasher): Piling up dishes in the sink is a sure way to make cleaning feel overwhelming. If you have a dishwasher, load it after every meal.

If you wash up by hand, make it part of your routine straight after eating so nothing sits for too long. Working with a small kitchen? Make sure to clean as you go. Nothing makes a tiny space feel messier than a sink full of dishes.

Sweep or spot clean the floor: A quick sweep at the end of the day picks up crumbs and stops dirt from spreading. If you have young children, you’ll probably need to do this more often, especially after mealtimes! For small spills, a damp cloth or mop does the trick.

Empty the bins regularly: Rubbish builds up fast in the kitchen, and nothing ruins a clean space like overflowing bins or lingering smells. Make it a habit to take out the rubbish as soon as it’s full and give the bin a quick wipe to keep it fresh.

The Weekly Kitchen Cleaning Routine

A deeper clean once a week keeps your kitchen looking and feeling fresh. If you’re juggling work, family, or other commitments, try breaking it up over a few days rather than tackling it all at once.

Clean the hob and oven: If your hob has burnt-on spills, spray it with a degreaser and let it sit while you do other tasks. Wipe down all surfaces and clean any removable parts in warm, soapy water.

If your oven needs attention, use an oven cleaner or a bicarbonate of soda paste and leave it to work its magic before scrubbing.

Wipe down cupboards and appliances: Kitchen cupboards collect grease and fingerprints over time, especially near cooking areas. Wipe them down with warm soapy water or a degreaser.

Give your fridge, microwave, and toaster a quick clean too! Food splatters and crumbs build up fast in these spots.

Scrub the sink and freshen the drain: The sink gets used all day, so a proper clean keeps it hygienic. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda around the basin, scrub with a sponge, then rinse with white vinegar to disinfect.

You can also pour boiling water down the drain to flush out any grime.

Wash tea towels and sponges: These can hold bacteria, so swap them out regularly.

Throw tea towels in the wash and replace sponges or soak them in boiling water with a splash of vinegar to kill germs.

Polish stainless steel surfaces: Use stainless steel cleaner to remove fingerprints and watermarks from your fridge, sink, and stainless steel appliances. This keeps them looking shiny and new.

Clean glass surfaces: Spray glass cleaner on your oven door, glass cabinets, and any other glass surfaces to keep them streak-free and sparkling.

The Deep Kitchen Clean (Every Few Months)

Some tasks don’t need doing weekly but are worth tackling now and then to keep your kitchen in top shape.

Clean out the fridge and freezer: Take everything out, wipe down the shelves, and toss anything past its use-by date.

If your freezer has frost build-up, defrost it to keep it running efficiently.

Deep clean the extractor fan and splashback: Grease and dust collect here over time, so remove the extractor filters and soak them in hot, soapy water.

Wipe down the splashback with a degreaser or warm, soapy water.

Wash the bin and disinfect handles: Even if you empty the bin regularly, it can still get grimy. Rinse it out, scrub with a disinfectant, and dry it before replacing the liner.

Wipe down cupboard handles, light switches, and anything else frequently touched.

Clean behind appliances: Every so often, move your fridge, cooker, and other large appliances to sweep and mop underneath.

You’d be surprised at how much dust and crumbs collect there!
