The 10 minute hack everyone’s using to make white socks brighter than ever
Nothing makes a fashion statement like a pair of bright, blindingly white socks. But let’s be honest, white socks have a knack for going from heavenly to horrendous faster than you can say “dirty laundry”.
Whether it’s muck from walking around the house or that grimy grey you can never seem to shift, it’s heartbreaking, right? But don’t worry, we’ve cracked the code on how to make your socks dazzle like the day you bought them.
And the best part? It only takes 10 minutes (okay, maybe a bit longer if you’re soaking overnight, but that’s passive time, so it doesn’t count).
So, pop the kettle on, grab your grim socks, and let’s get them sorted.
The Simple Hack That’ll Save Your Socks

Busy? We get it. Nobody has hours to faff about with laundry. That’s why this quick and easy hack is a game changer. With just a few bits from around the house, your socks can go from sad to sensational.
You don’t even need fancy stuff like a lab coat or goggles (unless you fancy looking the part). Here’s all the info you need to know;
You Will Need:
- A sink full of hot water (as hot as your hands can handle without screaming).
- 3 or 4 tablespoons of oxygen bleach (trust us, it’s magic).
- A teaspoon of washing up liquid (the good old stuff you use on your plates).
How To Make Your Socks Sparkle
- Fill your sink with hot water.
- Chuck in 3 or 4 tablespoons of oxygen bleach and give it a good stir.
- Add a teaspoon of washing up liquid.
- Plonk your dirty socks in and let them soak for 10 to 15 minutes and watch the grime do a disappearing act.
- Chuck the socks in the washing machine and stick them on a hot wash with your regular detergent.
Boom! Your socks will be looking so fresh, they’ll put new ones to shame.
Don’t Want To Use Bleach? No Problem!

If the word “bleach” makes you nervous or you’ve run out (again), don’t worry. There are loads of natural ways to get your whites gleaming.
You’ve probably already got some of this stuff kicking about in your kitchen.
Ammonia Whitens Socks
Whenever you load your washer you add detergent. But in some cases it’s the detergent that’s causing the problem. Sometimes it’s the detergent that causes white socks to turn dingy.
An easy way to bring your white socks back to their full whiteness is to use ammonia. All you have to do is;
- Chuck your white socks in the washer.
- Put 1 cup of ammonia in the detergent drawer.
- Wash in the normal way.
Don’t add any detergent let the ammonia work its magic.
White Vinegar For Whiter Socks
White vinegar, the secret weapon you didn’t know you needed. It’ll lift stains, kill smells, and make your socks look brand new. All you need to do is;
- Mix a litre of boiling water with a cup of vinegar.
- Dunk your socks in and leave them to soak overnight.
- Pop them in the washing machine, and Bob’s your uncle.
Don’t use any detergent and let the white vinegar remove any stains or bad smells from your socks.
Baking Soda Is The Whitening Miracle Powder

Baking soda isn’t just for cakes, it’s a stain busting legend. If you want to use baking soda to get your socks whiter than white all you need to do is;
- Fill the sink with hot water and add a cup of baking soda.
- Soak your socks overnight.
- Wash as normal and add your usual detergent, sprinkling half a cup of baking soda straight in the machine.
- Use a hot wash and really blast that grime away.
Whitening Socks Using Lemons
Lemon juice isn’t just for cocktails or pancakes. It not only whitens those dirty socks, it also removes bacteria. So for clean, fresh smelling and brilliant white socks all you need to do is;
- Squeeze a medium lemon into a bowl of hot water.
- Let your socks soak in the citrus spa for a couple of hours.
- Finish off with a hot wash and your regular detergent.
Hydrogen Peroxide The Gentle Bleaching Agent
You probably remember your granny using hydrogen peroxide to disinfect cuts, bleach her hair and a 1000 other chores around the home. It’s less harsh than other bleaches and is safe to use on grimy socks. All you have to do is;
- Mix 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide into 1 gallon of hot water.
- Add your usual detergent in the usual quantity.
- Let those socks soak for 30 to 40 minutes.
- Bung the socks in the washer and wash on a hot wash with your usual detergent.
Bluing Liquid To The Rescue
Ever heard of bluing liquid? This stuff adds a tiny blue tint to your socks, so if your white socks are yellowing, bluing liquid might be your new best friend.
It’s not cheap but as you only use a little at a time, it lasts for ages. Plus you get the choice of liquid or powdered bluing power. To get those yellowing white socks back to brilliant white all you need to do is;
- Wash your socks as normal.
- Stir a ¼ teaspoon of bluing liquid into 2 pints of cold water.
- Add it to your washing machine’s final rinse.
Your socks will come out so dazzling, you’ll be scared to wear them. Oh, and don’t worry if you notice the washing water has turned blue, that’s normal.
