Can I Use Denture Tablets In My Washing Machine?

If you subscribe to certain social media platforms you’ve probably seen or at least heard about using denture tablets to clean a number of things around your home. From toilet bowls to coffee cups, denture tablets seem to clean them all with ease.

However, can you use denture tablets in a washing machine? Well, no matter what you might see or hear on social media, it’s not worth risking your washing machine by using a product when you don’t know what effect it will have.

I would never recommend using denture tablets in your washing machine. This is because, as they were not designed for use in a washer, you don’t know what effect they might have.

Just because a random stranger online says it’s safe, would you risk the health of your washing machine? Keep reading to find out more.

Is It Safe To Use Denture Tablets In A Washing Machine?

The first thing you need to consider is whether you are prepared to buy a new washing machine if things go wrong due to using denture tablets in the machine. For a start, washing machine manufacturers have never recommended using denture tablets in their appliances.

This leads me to assume that any warranty you have on your washer would be voided if you were to use denture tablets in your machine and the machine went wrong shortly afterwards.

Plus there are plenty of well known manufacturer approved cleaning products available that are designed for use in the washing machine. If you are really determined to use denture tablets to get stains out of clothes or whatever, I would recommend using the denture tablets as a pre-treatment by soaking the garment in a solution of water and denture tablets.

If you’re hell bent on using denture tablets in your washing machine, you do so at your own risk. Remember the social media post carries no liability for any action you perform.

Please Note: Denture tablets work by bleaching dentures. This means they should never be used on any clothes other than white clothes. The use of any bleaching agent on dark or coloured clothes is likely to have a detrimental effect on them.

However, if you decide to go ahead anyway, here are the steps to take to ensure that at least your clothes don’t get damaged.

  1. Place 1 denture tablet in a bowl of water
  2. Get a single garment turned inside out and do a spot test on an inconspicuous area (like on a seam)
  3. Allow 10 to 15 minutes to pass to see if anything happens to the fabric
  4. If the garment starts to fade or show any signs of damage, stop the test, rinse the garment thoroughly and don’t use this method for any more items
  5. Repeat for the rest of the laundry
  6. Then place each item in the drum of your washer
  7. Place 1 to 2 denture tablets (2 is the maximum) in the drum
  8. Start a regular wash cycle
  9. Once the cycle finishes, remove the garments and inspect them for stains or blemishes
  10. If there are any stains or blemishes, the garments will need to be treated and rewashed
  11. If the garments are blemish free, they can be dried in the usual way

If your aim is to clean the drum of your appliance, you should put two denture tablets into the empty drum and run a hot wash cycle.

Other Uses For Denture Tablets Around the Home

Toilet

As I said earlier, using denture tablets in your washing machine isn’t necessarily a good idea. However, they can be useful for other cleaning tasks.

Below are a few of the other ways you can use denture tablets for cleaning in the home. They include;

  • Cleaning The Toilet
All you need to do is drop 2 denture tablets into the bowl of the toilet and leave overnight. The following morning flush the toilet and all of those stains will be gone.
  • Cleaning Tea & Coffee Cups
Simply fill the cup with warm water and add 1 denture tablet. The tablet will fizz as the cleaning begins. Once the fizzing stops, rinse the cup and all of the staining will have gone.
  • Removing Stains From Teaspoons
If your teaspoons are tarnished too, simply place them in the cup with the denture tablet and warm water. Once the fizzing stops, remove the teaspoon and rinse.
  • Whitening Net Curtains
To brighten white net curtains, place 3 denture tablets in a bowl of warm water and place the nets in the solution. Allow to soak for around 10 minutes then wash in the usual way.
  • Removing Water Stains
If your shower screen has dried on water marks, simply dissolve 1 denture tablet in a spray bottle full of warm water. Spray the shower screen and allow the mixture to drip down the surface. Leave for 30 minutes and wipe with a clean, soft cloth.
  • Cleaning Bathroom Tiles
To clean the tiles in your bathroom simply add 3 denture tablets to a spray bottle filled with warm water. Spray onto the tiles and leave for around 30 to 40 minutes. Then rinse with clean water and a sponge.
  • Cleaning Trainers
  • If your trainers are dirty and smelly, check the care label and if it’s OK soak them in a bucket filled with warm water and 3 denture tablets for a couple of hours. Then rinse the trainers and dry in an airy place out of direct sunlight or not too near to a heat source.
  • Cleaning Jewellery
If your jewellery is dirty or tired looking, all you need to do is put 1 denture tablet in a cup of warm water and drop the jewellery in. Allow to soak for around 20 minutes and then rinse clean. This is not recommended for softer jewels like pearls, turquoise or lapis lazuli or for silver items. But it is fine for diamonds, gold and platinum.
  • Cleaning Water Bottles/Flasks
If you haven’t used your water bottle or flask for a while, it can become smelly. To remove the smell and bring your water bottle back to its former glory, just fill with warm water and add 2 denture tablets. Allow to soak for 60 minutes and wash it out.
  • Cleaning Burnt Saucepans
If you have accidentally left a pan to boil dry, it can be almost impossible to remove the burnt food. However adding 1 denture tablet to that saucepan filled with hot water is all it takes to remove most of that burnt mess. Allow to soak for around 60 minutes and then wash the pan as normal.
  • Clean Dental Retainers
If you wear a dental retainer to keep your teeth in place after you’ve had a brace removed, you can clean it using denture tablets. Fill a cup with water and add 1 denture tablet and place the retainer in the cup for around 10 minutes. Then remove and rinse.
