What’s The Difference Between English Muffins & Crumpets?
Both of these breakfast bread type foods can be served with butter or in any of the other interchangeable ways shown above. So what exactly are the differences between them?
What Are Crumpets
Crumpets are traditional English round bread-like flat rolls that are made from flour, milk and yeast. The crumpet’s surface is peppered with small holes which are formed from bubbles in the yeast as they cook.
Crumpets are thinner than muffins and are served as is. They are traditionally served with butter, jam, honey and clotted cream.
What Are English Muffins
Despite the name, English muffins were actually invented in the USA. First sold as “toaster crumpets”, in 1894 in a New York bakery. They caught on as a more elegant form of toast and are still popular in the USA to this day.
English muffins are thicker and are split in 2 before being toasted and served. Traditional toppings include butter, jam, honey etc.
