Bosch washing machines have a self-diagnosis system which checks on how the appliance is running and reports any errors it finds. These are displayed as error codes that need to be dealt with to keep the washer running at its optimum best.

The problem is, you can’t just remove this error code from the display screen, even once the error has been dealt with. You have to fix the error and then follow a certain route or scheme to reset the Bosch washing machine.

Once the procedure has been successfully performed, you will be able to use your Bosch washing machine as normal. In some cases, the washer throws up an error code even when there’s no actual error to be found. This is usually caused by an electrical power surge or software glitch.

However, the same rules apply, the error code won’t disappear from the display screen until you have performed a reset. Keep reading to find out exactly how to reset your model.

When Is It Necessary To Reset A Bosch Washing Machine?

There are several occasions when you should try to reset your Bosch washing machine rather than contact a repairer to diagnose and solve this issue. Performing a reset can be a fast and easy remedy for many common washing machine problems.

In many cases, the problem and subsequent error code are caused by a simple power surge or software glitch. In some cases, it can be something as simple as an unbalanced load that has caused the error code to be displayed and stopped your appliance from working.

Having said that, it’s important to note that sometimes, your Bosch washing machine has diagnosed a real problem which will need to be fixed. Constantly resetting the appliance can cause a more serious issue which will take longer and be more expensive to fix.

Sometimes by ignoring the error code and continuously performing reset after reset, the damage becomes so severe that you will need to replace the washing machine. Had you acted on getting the fault fixed when the error code first appeared, it might have had an easy to solve fix.

The longer you leave any electrical or mechanical problem on a washing machine, the more serious it is likely to become. If your Bosch washing machine isn’t performing as it should, or stops working altogether and displays an error code, you might have to perform a reset to get the wet laundry from the drum.

Bosch Washing Machine Stops Mid-Cycle

If your Bosch washer has stopped mid-cycle you should check the power supply first. It is possible that the plug has been pulled slightly out of the wall socket by the vibrations of the appliance.

If this is the case, all you will need to do is ensure the plug is fully inserted into the socket. However, you will almost certainly need to perform a reset to get the appliance working again.

Bosch Washing Machine Fails To Drain Properly

If your Bosch washing machine fails to drain properly it will most likely be caused by a clogged filter or a twisted, kinked or blocked drain hose.

Blocked Filter

In this case, you will need to manually drain the machine by placing a container under the filter housing and slowly unscrewing the filter to allow the water to flow into the container.

Once the container is full, you will need to tighten the filter back in place, empty the container and repeat until the drum is free from water. Then you will need to clean the filter to remove any debris that could be causing the blockage.

Once the filter is clean and has been replaced into its housing and screwed in securely, the washer should function as normal. However, you might need to perform a reset to clear any fault codes.

Drain Hose Issues

You can inspect the drain hose and straighten any twists or kinks, if this doesn’t solve the issue, you might need to disconnect the drain hose and run a plumber’s snake through the hose to remove any blockages.

Once the drain hose is free from any twists, kinks or blockages, the machine should work as normal. However, you might need to perform a reset to clear any error codes before the machine will function.

The Drum Will Not Spin Correctly

washing machine drum

The most common cause of a washer’s drum that won’t spin correctly is an unbalanced load or an overloaded drum. If this is the case, all that’s usually needed is to remove some of the laundry or rearrange the load so that it’s more level.

You will then probably need to perform a reset to get the washer working properly again. In other cases, the washer isn’t set on a level floor. This will entail using a spirit level and adjusting the feet accordingly.

Once the appliance has been leveled properly, you might need to perform a reset to clear any error code and get it working properly again.

The Drum Doesn’t Spin At All

If the drum won’t spin at all it’s often caused by the door not being shut properly or the sensor thinking that the door isn’t shut correctly. Check that the door is fully closed and if that doesn’t solve the issue, you will need to check the door lock and sensor for continuity using a multimeter.

If either part fails the continuity test, they will need to be replaced. After solving this issue, you might need to perform a reset to get the washer running properly again.

Bosch Washing Machine Displays An Error Code

Depending on the nature of the error code, many can be cleared temporarily simply by performing a reset. The washer should then work normally again.

However, if the error code keeps reappearing, it will need to be dealt with. Otherwise it could lead to a serious problem. Having said that, in many cases the fix is quite simple (like a blocked filter for example). Once the problem has been dealt with, performing a reset will often get the appliance up and running properly again.

How To Help Prevent Bosch Washing Machines From Displaying Error Codes

Control panel of washing machine

As my old granny used to say, “prevention is better than cure” and that’s certainly true of washing machines. There are a few things you can do to prevent your Bosch washing machine from displaying too many error codes. These include;

  • Never overload or underload the drum, it is recommended that you load the drum with no less than ½ and no more than ¾ of the full weight capacity
  • Run a hot service wash every month
  • Ensure the filter and detergent dispenser drawer are cleaned every two months
  • Only ever use the recommended detergent for your Bosch washing machine and in the correct quantity
  • Regularly check the condition and position of the inlet and drain hoses to ensure they are not twisted or kinked
