Enamel Dish

What Is Enamel?

Enamel is made from powdered glass (which is known as porcelain enamel) that is bonded onto steel. The dish, plate, bowl, cup or jug is pressed out of a sheet of steel then dipped in liquid enamel and fired in a kiln to set it.

It then hardens to a smooth coating on the steel which is extremely durable. This is not a new process, in fact, it is known that ancient Egyptians used to make enamel objects. This early enamel was very expensive and also very decorative.

It wasn’t until the mid 19th century that enamel sinks, baths and cookware started being used in the home. A few years later they developed the technique of enameling steel which led to the decrease in price of enamel cookware. Which led to its increased popularity during the late 19th century.

Why did the two dishes get married?
