How To Change A Water Filter On Your Samsung Refrigerator

If you own a Samsung refrigerator that is connected to a water line, the filter is an important part of the system. The filter ensures that the water used in the dispenser and ice maker is clean and safe to use.

It is important to check and replace the water filter every 6 months. If not, you might notice the water starts tasting off or there’s a sediment in the water. You will also notice the filter light turns red and an alarm sounds when the filter needs changing.

In this article we explain how to change the water filter on your Samsung refrigerator.

How To Change The Water Filter On A Samsung Refrigerator

You should consult your user manual for model specific instructions on changing the water filter and you should only ever use genuine Samsung parts.

Identify The Type Of Filter You Require

Before you can change the filter you’ll need to know exactly which type of filter you need. Depending on the type of Samsung refrigerator you own, the type of filter and where it is installed will vary.

After consulting your user manual, and finding your water filter, you can check the model number found on the filter. There are 5 common types of filter which are;

  1. DA29-10105J
  2. DA29-00003F
  3. DA97-17376B
  4. DA29 – 00020B
  5. DA29-00003G

You should consult the individual filter specifications for the matching refrigerator model number. There are two different types of filter fittings which are: Externally Fitted Filters and Internally Fitted Filters.

Externally Fitted Filters

If you own a Samsung smart fridge freezer, you can check the status of the filter by doing the following on your smartphone;

  • Swipe left on the home screen
  • Tap fridge manager
  • Tap fridge settings
  • Check the filter status by checking the water filter display

Changing The Filter

To change the filter you should consult your user manual for specific instructions. In the absence of specific instructions, you should;

  1. Turn off the main water supply
  2. Connect the water supply line to the inlet side of the new filter
  3. Connect the fridge dispenser line to the outlet side of the filter
  4. Check for leaks
  5. Fit the water filter into position and fix the clips to hold it in place
  6. Then press and hold filter reset on the display for around 3 seconds to reset the filter timer (these filters should be replaced every 6 months)
  7. Once the filter is in place dispense water for around 7 minutes to ensure there is no air in the water line

Take care because a new filter can cause the dispenser to spray water at first. This is due to air in the water line. Dispensing water for 5 to 7 minutes should clear any air leaving the water to flow properly again.

Internally Fitted Filters

The refrigerator will notify you when the filter needs changing. The indicator light will change from blue to purple as it ages until it eventually turns red after 6 months which is when it will need to be replaced.

To reset the water filter alarm system, all you need to do is press and hold the ice type/filter change button for 3 seconds.

If for any reason you decide that you no longer wish to use the water filter, press and hold the ice type button for 5 to 7 seconds this will turn off the filter indicator and filter change display.

Changing The Filter

For model specific instructions on how to change the water filter, consult your user manual. In the absence of a user manual, the fitting instructions differ depending on the type of filter your appliance uses.

Type 1

For type 1 filters, the red filter light comes on just before the filter runs out. To replace it, you should do the following;

  1. Turn off the water supply then turn the filter about a quarter turn anticlockwise
  2. Pull the filter from the filter case (housing) keeping the cartridge horizontal to minimise any water leaks
  3. Pat the filter case (housing) dry using a towel
  4. Insert the new filter into the filter case (housing)
  5. Push the filter in and then turn it clockwise until it locks (the locked symbol should line up with the indicator line
  6. Press and hold the filter reset button for 3 to 5 seconds this will change the colour of the indicator from red to blue, green or yellow
  7. Turn the water supply back on
  8. Flush the dispenser for 6 to 7 minutes to remove any air from the water line.

In some cases it is difficult to remove the old filter because impurities in the water can make it adhere to the case (housing). If you find it difficult to remove, try using a tighter grip and exerting extra pressure when pulling the filter from its case.

Or you could use a filter wrench or a pair of pliers to help remove the filter.

Type 2

For type 2 filters you should do the following;

  1. Turn off the water supply and then open the filter cartridge cover
  2. Turn the filter cartridge 90 degrees anticlockwise to unlock it
  3. Pull the filter out
  4. Insert the new filter
  5. Turn the cartridge knob clockwise to lock it into position
  6. Close the filter cartridge cover
  7. Go to more options on the control panel and run filter reset
  8. Once the filter has been replaced, run the dispenser for 6 to 7 minutes to remove any air from the water line
